Summer Home Updates

Jul 6, 2016

There has been so much going on since I last posted. Sorry, I've been cheating with Instagram! While I love IG because it takes seconds to post a picture, I don't feel like you get the full explanation behind a photo that you do on blogs. Some people are great at capturing their life in a four sentence paragraph, but I need to talk it out!

As you know, I've been working on my backyard décor since we put in the new pool. I had moved our counter stools out there for a party and loved the way they looked so much that I decided to keep them outside, and get new ones inside. I searched online for a couple of days and decided on these. I love them so much! The Moroccan style goes great with the white walls and arches, but the black sets off the light kitchen and coordinates with the light fixtures. Both the lights and stools have flecks of gold, too. I have seen these stools before, but what I didn't realize at the time is that they were the same ones we had in our beach house last summer in Rosemary Beach. I loved them then, but thought no way could I have upholstered seats with my three boys. But, I decided to take the plunge now that they are getting older. I'm not sure if that was such a wise decision. They are definitely scotchguarded!

You can see the old barstools hanging out at the outdoor kitchen here. They were made for this space! The same day we received our new counter stools, the new pool loungers came in. That was a good day!

I don't know if you have shopped for loungers, but they are extremely expensive. I went to a patio store and found ones that looked identical five times more than what I pad for these at Target online. These were a great deal, especially since we needed three.

We were off on vacation a few days later and never got to really use them until our July 4th party. As much as I loved them I thought they needed a little color. It's a pool after all. So, I added flowers and lanterns. I considered lumbar pillows, but let's get real. That would only be for staging and I would take those suckers right off the minute I snapped a picture. Unless I found them $10 or under I can't pay to stage a photo, which is funny considering I stage homes as a side business! There are other ways to incorporate color and pattern that's just as useful as it is practical. I had planned on switching the cream umbrella shades for navy and white stripes, but World Market was sold out. Oh well, they will probably carry them next year. I have a serious fascination with all things turquoise and navy right now, but there's always a chance that will change next year. At least the big pieces are neutral and will go with anything.

Here's a closer look all decorated for our party.

I also bought new outdoor dishes since we spend most evenings outside. It's ridiculously hot right now, but around 7-8pm it feels amazing. We get a great cooling breeze off the lake and lay in our loungers or eat dinner al fresco.

I also picked up a few accessories for under the covered porch last weekend. I still have more to show you of this space to get the full effect. It's amazing how a few pops of color pulled it all together. I'm still looking to add more flowers and a corner chair to the left side, but it's almost there.

I'm thankfully in small project mode now that I've got my big and expensive pieces in and I couldn't be happier. Browsing the stores for just the right piece with no hurry on the weekends is so much fun. I'm always amazed at what a difference these small décor pieces bring to a space. Honestly, they make just as much as an impact as the furniture!
