New Home Trends

Feb 11, 2014

I was in a different area of town recently for an appointment and I couldn't resist the allure of the shiny, new model homes I passed on my way home. It's been a while since I've been in a model home and I was pleasantly surprised at some of the features that are being offered. I didn't think to take pictures, but I was able to find the models I liked online. Do you want to see?

My favorite ones are by Westin Homes.

St.Christopher Floor Plan! Corner Lot on Cul-De-Sac! Environments For Living Program! Tech-Shield, Sprinkler System in Front, 3 Car Garage

This is the St. Christopher model and it's a monster at 4453 square feet. I love the porte cochere, or also known as a carport. ;) This is great for those days you are coming and going all day long. There's a door off of it that leads right into the laundry room off the kitchen for easy access. I also like the courtyard it creates between the garage in the back and the carport. It's perfect for basketball and small kids to ride their bikes. And, check out the double doors. Isn't it grand?!

This homebuilder is known for their grand entrances.

Walls of Windows

Thank goodness homes are very well insulated these days.

Almost all of the study ceilings have this detail. I like how they added wood to this one.

A standard fireplace

I noticed many of the homes are doing away with shower doors. Considering the way mine looks right now I am a big fan of this trend.

Media rooms aren't a new thing, but I've never seen them standard in new homes.

Huge, Huge Media Room with Pre-wired for Surround Sounds and more!

Wood Vent Hoods

It seems minor, but this is one feature I've always wanted in my kitchen.

Many of these features have been offered in custom homes for years, but not by standard homebuilders. I'm also excited to see small mud rooms in many of the homes. Most of them just have a small beadboard wall in the hallway with a few hooks. I hope these get bigger as they gain popularity. We have nine hooks and could use a few more in ours.

Have you checked out model homes in your area recently? I find it so much fun and definitely tempting!

  1. Hi Jennifer, this home is amazing... I love the ceiling with the wood planks and boy my husband and son would never come out of that media room! We live in a beach community with older homes… So we don't have model homes in our area for me to stalk:) Have a great day!

  2. Gorgeous! I love all the windows and that entry is stunning!! We have a carport, but I think I'm going to start calling it our porte cochere, so much more fancy. :)

  5. I love going to open houses and model homes just to look! This house is gorgeous. Some days I want to scrap my house and just move into something completely new and exactly how I want it. I also wouldn't mind a doorless shower, one less thing to scrub! :)
