Lighting: The Missing Element

Nov 6, 2012

Despite your decorating style all of us want a room with wow factor. One of the easiest ways to add ambience and drama is through great lighting, but it seems to be forgotten when decorating a room. I can honestly say I'm guilty of it, too.

I love how all of Candice Olson's rooms have layers of lighting-chandeliers, lamps, candles, sconces, and what she refers to as "pot lights." In case you live near me they're the same as recessed or can lights.

We innately know candlelight adds ambience because it's one of the first elements almost everyone adds when setting a formal dining table.

I feel like someone should be serving champagne in this closet.

This is one of my favorites and the lighting is a big reason why.

I've been dying to add sconces, but my house isn't prewired for them. I'd love to have an electrician come in and add outlets, but I can get the same look much cheaper with plug-in sconces.

I prefer the cords hidden behind furniture or artwork like in this office.

The plug-in sconces aren't cheap, but I did spot some at the Pottery Barn outlet last month. I'm going to have to check them out on my next trip!

  2. I couldn't agree more - lighting is everything, and Candace is a MASTER at it. I visited an open house with a new 45k lighting plan once. My husband was horrified, but it was AWESOME!!!

    1. I bet it was fabulous! I think it's funny when my husband finds out how much things cost and it works in my favor because what I want doesn't seem so expensive anymore.

  3. Yes, it almost always has been the missing element when it comes to designs. Lighting can make a huge difference to any room, it's that simple. But everything here looks kind of expensive. Thanks for sharing your ideas and thoughts.
