How I Lightened Up

Nov 9, 2012

For several years the new trend has been to use lighter colors in our homes.

Beautiful! It's completely impractical for a mom of three boys, but pretty to look at. I resigned myself to keeping my dark brown leather sofas until my kids get much older or maybe even move out of the house. I can't tell you how many gross things I scrape and scrub off the leather daily. I can't tell you what those things are that I'm scraping off either because I honestly don't know. Eww!

This is how my family room used to look when we first bought the sofas.

I decorated like most people in my region, dark and ornate. Red curtains, ornate red and gold faux oriental rug, and gold walls may have been in style here (and still is), but it was never really my style. I immediately knew this wasn't for me and started changing things up right after Christmas with inexpensive things-curtains, pillows, the rug, and finally the paint.

Here it is today.

Decorating around dark furniture isn't easy. My first thought was to go cozy with reds and golds, but it was too stifling for me. Dark, ornate rooms are fine if that's your style and I've seen ones that work. But, if you long for a lighter room this is a way to do it without having to go out and buy all new furniture. I love how the paint lightens up the room and makes it feel fresh. I used to think the furniture was the problem, but it wasn't. I needed to balance the dark furniture with light walls and fabrics. The new white trimwork helps, too.

Here are other good examples of dark sofas paired with light walls and fabrics.

These rooms could not feel any lighter and fresher!

  2. Wow, this is great! My parent's home was always darker with warmer tones, so when I first moved out, I assumed that was my style too. (And because I didn't know any differently) But now that I'm a grown-up, with my own home, I've found that my style is actually light and airy! Congrats on your new colors too. I just love your living room now. PS - It looked great before too, but now it's more my own style :)

    1. I know what you mean. When we bought our house I just decorated like everyone else, but knew it wasn't right for me when it was all done.

  3. Hi Jennifer, just found your blog via the comment you left at Emily's blog. Great example of how to create a light look while keeping your dark furniture. The pale color on the walls combined with your leather pieces create a perfect neutral backdrop that is perfect for allowing you to switch things up seasonally too. Well done!

    1. Thank you! I'm so glad you found your way here!

Getting rid of the leather sofas wasn't an option because of my three little, messy boys. I'm so glad I finally found a way to work around them to get the room I want. Saving all that money wasn't so bad either!
